New York Scores at Last Night’s Super Bowl

VW Commercial Begins and Ends with Nod to the Big Apple

Celebrating its 75th anniversary in the US, Volkswagen marked its launch during last night’s Super Bowl with a high-profile ad that began in New York in 1949 and ended in the Big Apple in 2024.

The commercial, “An American Love Story,” is a nostalgic tour of the brand’s 75-year history in America, beginning with the arrival of the first Type 1 vehicle—nicknamed “The Beetle”—imported to New York by Dutch businessman Ben Pon in 1949. Pairing historical and recreated footage, the Super Bowl commercial is filled with captivating visuals that encapsulate Volkswagen’s role in some of America’s most recognizable cultural moments including scenes from Herbie Rides Again, Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo, The Simpsons, and Star Wars character likenesses.

The ad ends with a spotlight on Volkswagen’s ID. Buzz, an exciting electric vehicle that will be shown at the upcoming New York Auto Show next month. Watch it here.
